It had been over a year since I walked through McCarthy Woods. I was too late for the spring flowers, but the early summer ones were out.
The bright yellow goatsbeard standing tall is a sure sign that June is here. In bud and in bloom
The honeysuckles were blooming everywhere. Primarily creamy-white but some rose coloured
Strawberry, anemone, garlic mustard, false solomon seal (2X), dogwood
I've frequently call this yellow clover, but it is black medick
Another one I am guilty of mis-calling. It isn't a buttercup, but has a more distinguished name - Greater Celandine. A real buttercup on the right.
Bitter wintercress
Fleabane, Grass in bloom, Forget-me-not (2X)
White baneberry - some in bloom, some finished blooming
Black raspberry, red raspberry*, blackberry. (*The ID on the red rasberry is suspicious)
Daisies only in bud, bladder campion in bud and bloom
Elderberry and blue cohosh both had their berries forming. Blue cohosh seemed to be everywhere
Some coltsfoot were still in seed stage surprisingly. Unsurprisingly the dandelions were too
I had forgotten about all the white trilliums in McCarthy Woods.
They were all dying off but still readily in view
Dog strangling vine is a VERY invasive plant that will quickly take over and strangle the underbrush to death. It has to be pulled out by hand
Field horsetail along the rail tracks (see below), milkweed, ostrich fern, touch-me-not, new growth on a sumac tree
The first rabbit I saw was shy and didn't stay around
However the second was much more co-operative
A common whitetail dragonfly stayed still long enough to show it's camouflage and let me get in closer
A mourning cloak butterfly did not want open it's wings. A tiny white spring moth
Old woodpeckering in a pine tree. The roots of a wind blown over tree holding on to rocks with its shallow roots
Pieces of a tree trunk that had been cut off the trail, hosted a good number of Dryad's Saddle fungus on them
A closer inspection showed water drops being shed by the fungus
The rail line cutting through the forest. Coyotes love to follow rail lines through the city. I didn't see any that day.
