We had not been to Bruce Pit before as we understood it was just an off-leash dog park, but then we started reading nature comments about it, so we dropped in one morning.
We noticed a Canada goose sitting atop a beaver lodge. Looked like it was sitting on a nest, but we had a closer look  later and there was no nest.
Another beaver lodge, in a stream running off the pond, had almost completely blocked off the water flow
We accidentally scared a wood duck family. Mum and 12 ducklings
A smaller mallard family had been patrolling the stream and taken a rest
Two male mallards appeared , one of which had been bossing the other ducks around. I was expecting a fight, but no, however they did have an interesting interaction though
A few black-crowned night herons were around, but avoided us most of the time
A red-winged blackbird nest was hidden down in the reeds. There seemed to be only one juvenile
A pair of Baltimore orioles were busy flying. While we knew about where their nest was we couldn't find it amongst the leaves
A great blue heron flew off in the distance. That was the only great blue we saw.
A pair of grebe were fishing in the pond. They are underwater more than up top...
A small variety of flowers were in bloom. Scroll over for their names
